Business owners across the nation consider the health and safety of their employees and customers to be their top priorities. In the swimming pool industry, commercial pool owners show their commitment to safety by having all of necessary protective equipment on deck in case of an emergency. (If you need a refresher on essential safety gear, check out this blog for more information.) Go above and beyond the call of duty by providing your lifeguards with these tips to beat the summer heat.
Keep Cool in the Shade
The key to getting some relief from the blazing heat? Moving out of direct sunlight and finding solace in the shade. Even though there’s virtually no difference in temperature between shaded and unshaded areas, blocking the direct solar radiation of the sun’s rays automatically makes the body feel cooler. So when your lifeguards are working long shifts, make sure they can stay cool under the umbrella. You don’t want them to bake in the sun!
Stay Hydrated
When the temperatures make the great outdoors feel like a sauna, the best way to keep body temperatures in check is to drink plenty of cool water. The science behind this is simple — the hotter it gets, the more you sweat. But all of the fluids that are sweating away have to be replenished, which is why it’s important to stay hydrated. Make sure your lifeguards are drinking plenty of water or electrolyte-replacement drinks to avoid dehydration.
Don’t Forget the SPF
As a consumer yourself, you know how important sunscreen is. You lather it on yourself and on your kids even when you’re outdoors for as little as 30 minutes. After all, the sun only needs a short period of time to get under your skin.
Now, think about your lifeguards. They’re working some pretty long shifts out in the sun. Even those who stay mostly in the shade aren’t protected from UV rays. Remind all of your lifeguards to wear sunscreen every day and reapply every 30 minutes, whether the sun is shining or hiding behind the clouds.
We hope these tips help your lifeguards have a fun, productive, and safe summer.
