If you’ve opened your pool for the year, chances are that you and your family are already chomping at the bit to start working on your tans and practicing your Marco Polo skills! However, if you have young children playing in your pool as well, taking a few steps to ensure a safe swim can mean the difference between a day of fun and disaster. Here at ecoFINISH®, an industry leader in pool finish installations, we’ve come up with a list of pool safety tips. Read on to learn three essential swimming tips that can help keep your kids happier and healthier this summer season!
Ban all running. There’s a reason why any public pool has a “no running” sign clearly posted outside. Running around a wet surface (like the deck of a pool) can cause slips and falls that can be painful or even deadly for children. Teach kids to avoid running and roughhousing near the water and install slip-resistant coatings near the entrance to the pool.
Supervise at all times. Even if your child seems like a strong swimmer, the possibility of a water injury is constantly present. Parents should know that they cannot rely on water wings, floats, or pool toys to keep their young child from drowning. Children under the age of 14 should always have an adult present when they are swimming.
Don’t forget your sunscreen. Not all swimming safety has to do with the water! When going out to swim, avoid burns by applying sunscreen with an SPF of at least 35. Remember to reapply every two hours for maximum protection.
Remember—you should never allow children or loved ones to swim in a pool that is falling apart or looks unsafe. Is the lining of your pool damaged, torn, or in need of repair?
